The Truth About Hyaluronic Acid: Hydration, Myths & Why We Love It

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the most talked-about skincare ingredients - and for good reason. As a powerful humectant, it helps skin retain moisture, leaving it plump, firm, and deeply hydrated. But with so much information (and misinformation) out there, we’re breaking down what you really need to know about this superstar ingredient and why we’ve incorporated it into several of our formulations at SiSi Georgian Bay.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our skin that helps maintain moisture levels. It has the unique ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it an essential ingredient for hydration and skin elasticity. Over time, our natural HA levels decline, which can lead to dryness and the appearance of fine lines. That’s where topical HA comes in - delivering the moisture your skin craves.

Different Molecular Weights Matter

Not all hyaluronic acid molecules are the same. They come in different molecular sizes, which determine how deeply they penetrate the skin:

  • High molecular weight HA sits on the skin’s surface, creating a protective, hydrating barrier and helping smooth and plump the skin.
  • Low molecular weight HA goes deeper, providing long-lasting hydration and supporting skin elasticity from within.

At SiSi Georgian Bay, we create a 2% concentration of both low and high molecular weight HA in our Hyaluronic Acid Serum, ensuring hydration at multiple levels of the skin.

Where You'll Find HA in Our Products

We love hyaluronic acid so much that we’ve added it to several of our formulations, including:

  • Face Lotions – for enhanced hydration and skin barrier support.
  • Body Lotions – now featuring colloidal oatmeal and HA for deep, soothing moisture.
  • Hydrating Toner – designed to keep skin soft, smooth, and replenished.

Myth: Hyaluronic Acid Must Be Applied to Damp Skin

One of the most common misconceptions about hyaluronic acid is that it must be applied to damp skin to work. While many people prefer applying skincare to slightly damp skin for better absorption, it’s not a requirement for HA to be effective. Since hyaluronic acid is already composed primarily of water, it can still do its job when applied to dry skin. However, sealing in hydration with a moisturizer afterward is always a good idea!

Why Your Skin Will Love It

Hyaluronic acid is lightweight, non-greasy, and suitable for all skin types, making it a must-have for any skincare ritual. Whether you’re looking to combat dryness, improve elasticity, or maintain a youthful glow, HA is a powerhouse ingredient that delivers visible results.
