The Autumn Skin Shift: What Your Skin Needs as the Seasons Change

The Autumn Skin Shift: What Your Skin Needs as the Seasons Change

There’s something about autumn on Georgian Bay that makes the change of season impossible to miss.

The mornings get cooler, the light changes, sweaters come back out, and before long the woodstove or furnace is running again.

Our skin often notices the change too.

Skin that felt perfectly comfortable through the warmer, more humid months can suddenly begin to feel a little tighter, drier or simply different. But seasonal skincare doesn’t need to be complicated.

Sometimes it’s simply about paying attention to what your skin is telling you and making a few thoughtful adjustments.

Why does skin feel different in the fall?

As temperatures drop, the air often becomes drier. Add indoor heating to the mix and our skin can spend much more time in a lower-humidity environment than it did during the summer.

That can contribute to increased water loss from the skin, leaving it feeling dry, tight or less supple.

This transition can become more noticeable as our skin matures. With age, natural oil production and the skin’s ability to retain moisture can change.

That doesn’t mean there’s something wrong that needs to be “fixed.” It simply means our skin may appreciate a little more support.

And that is how I think about seasonal skincare: supporting the skin rather than fighting with it.

Hydration and moisture aren’t quite the same thing

We often use the words hydrating and moisturizing interchangeably, but they play slightly different roles in skincare.

Hydrating ingredients help attract and hold water in the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, for example, which is why I like applying a hyaluronic acid serum to slightly damp skin.

Moisturizers combine ingredients that soften and condition the skin with ingredients that help support the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss.

As the weather becomes cooler and drier, using the two together can be particularly lovely.

For me, that might mean applying Pretty Wild 2% Hyaluronic Acid Serum after cleansing and toning, followed by Face Lotion during the day or something a little richer at night.

You don’t necessarily need another product. Sometimes you just need to use what you already have a little differently.

Be gentle with cleansing

This is a good time of year to notice how your skin feels after cleansing. It should feel clean, but not stripped or uncomfortably tight.

If it does, that’s information.

You may find that you don’t need as much cleansing in the morning as you did during the heat of summer. For some skin types, a splash of lukewarm water followed by the rest of your routine may be enough.

And as tempting as a steaming-hot face wash or shower can be when the temperature drops outside, very hot water isn’t particularly kind to dry skin.

Warm and gentle wins here.

Don’t exfoliate your way out of dry skin

When skin starts looking dull or flaky, our instinct can be to scrub it away. More exfoliation isn’t always the answer.

Over-exfoliating can leave already-dry or sensitive skin feeling even more uncomfortable. Let how your skin feels guide you rather than sticking to a schedule, and ease off if it feels irritated.

I love exfoliation, but I don’t believe skin needs to be polished into submission.

Gentle exfoliation followed by hydration and moisture is very different from aggressively trying to remove every bit of texture from your face.

Real skin has texture. And that is perfectly okay.

If you enjoy a clay mask, choose one that leaves your skin feeling comfortable rather than tight, and let your skin guide how often you use it. I think of masks less as something we have to do and more as a small ritual that gives us a reason to slow down for a few minutes.

Autumn is when I start reaching for richer nighttime care

There is something naturally comforting about an evening skincare ritual once the days get shorter.

This is when I begin reaching more consistently for Pretty Wild Over the Moon Night Cream.

I formulated it with 1% bakuchiol and Ceramide NP as a richer nighttime moisturizer for skin that could use a little extra nourishment and support.

Ceramides are naturally present in our skin and form an important part of its protective barrier. In skincare, ceramide ingredients can help support that barrier and help the skin hold onto moisture.

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived ingredient I love including in my skincare. For me, it’s a gentler approach than retinol and a lovely fit with how I want to care for my skin. That doesn’t mean every skin will respond the same way, so I always believe in paying attention to your own.

I don’t believe in declaring war on wrinkles or trying to erase every sign that we’ve lived.

I do believe in caring very well for the skin we’re in.

Those are two very different things.

Where does a facial oil fit?

As the weather gets colder, I also find myself reaching more often for my Argan Rosehip Face Serum.

Unlike a water-based serum, this one is a blend of oils, so I generally use it toward the end of my routine.

In the evening, that might mean:

Cleanse → Tone → Hyaluronic Acid Serum → Night Cream → Argan Rosehip Face Serum

When my skin feels particularly dry, a few drops over my Night Cream can be a beautiful final step. On other nights, Night Cream on its own is plenty.

I also like using a few drops after Face Lotion during the day when my skin is craving extra nourishment. If you’re wearing sunscreen, that remains your final morning skincare step.

Your fall routine doesn’t need to get bigger

One of the reasons I’ve simplified the SiSi collection is because I increasingly believe good skincare doesn’t need to involve an overflowing bathroom shelf.

A simple fall evening routine might be:

Cleanse → Tone → Hydrate → Moisturize

Then adjust from there. Some evenings call for a little more. Some call for less.

Weather, hormones, stress, age and time spent outside can all affect how your skin feels. Learning to notice those little changes is far more useful than blindly following a ten-step routine.

A quieter kind of skincare

Maybe that’s what I love most about this time of year.

Autumn naturally invites us to slow things down a little, to come inside earlier, make something warm, put on a sweater and settle into quieter rituals.

Skincare can be one of them.

Not because aging is something we need to correct.

Not because our skin needs to look twenty years younger.

Simply because taking a few minutes at the end of the day to care for ourselves feels good.

And sometimes, as the seasons change, our skin is simply asking us to listen a little more closely.

Here’s to caring for the skin we’re in, naturally, thoughtfully and unapologetically.
